Ive just had a count up, 17 gearbox failures in Div 3 this weekend.
I'm pleased to say I wasn't one of them, but I have read the previous comments about gearboxes without designers.

My gearbox had a 3/5 designer but says its still only good for 500km. That means I'm faced with building a new gearbox for each race.

Compared to other parts, its as if there is a decimal point in the wrong place somewhere.

Have I designed a terrible gearbox, or is that just how it is?

Did you focus on reliability? I think many use new gearboxes for races anyway.

my gearbox is crap but now i have a designer assigned part and focus on reliability it seems to be holding out. Dont use a new gearbox each race either. Including failures i think i have only used 6 so far and they are not done yet.

Hmm... I am not sure that is the best advice under all circumstances. I do not like risks, so always use a new gearbox. I get that checking the part is a good idea, just I have noticed on a 1,000 km reliable gearbox, its performance can start to diminish at 500-600. Some will even blow out at around 700.. but never normally below that level, so in my experience you are less likely to have problems with a new gearbox then without.

Does engine performance and driving style affect things here?

I see where you are coming from Michael and if money is no object then perhaps a new box for every race is a good idea, especially if your drivers are pushing during the race.

Testing is crucial but you can use older parts to complete the laps, if you retire during testing sure your driver will be pissed but you dont lose points. I push all my parts to destruction during testing (aside from tyres) and although performance drops they do last quite well.

If it was within my budget i would buy a new engine for every race too as they tend to decrease in stats after a while, as it is im planning for a long future within Pitwall so my spending is very limited right now.

lol! Not as rich as you would expect :(

It's amazing how much money you can save when you limit what you spend, will be needed to run my HQ once it's finished being built :)

I usually go thru a gearbox every 2 races, as I don't want to push it any further than that. Average lifetime of mine is around 1100km

I guess it depends on the variability of production too. I mean mine always seem the same standard. So I can gamble on a new gearbox with no problems... *touches wood*

But yeah.. if money is an issue then you can get at least 2 races from each gearbox. I tend to just use the one from last week for testing this week, then have a fresh one ready for the race. Same with engines...
