Dont think we are 100% on this but production of parts is based partly on the disipline skill of your mechanic. If it's not too high then you will never quite meet the weights stated in your designs.
The weight of produced parts always seems to vary by up to a few %. On most parts this doesn't make a huge difference (i.e. 3% of a 7kg exhaust is only 210gm, but of a 450kg chassis it's 13.5kg).
I've produced a lot more chassis than I needed to get ones with the lowest weight. I think there's five or six produced of my current design and only two have a weight that I'm happy with for racing. The others just get used in testing.
There seems to be a link with morale as well - a happier head mechanic seems more likely to produce a part close to the spec.
You also need to have the right amount of staff working on the part, too little and it will be overweight to many and it will be overweight. I have found a number which has been pretty consistent for chassis production normally producing a chassis within 5kgs of the design
Im not so sure on that Tim... I cant speak for the chassis but on a lot of other parts i have been producing them with the same number of mechanics over and over, the weights are far from consistent.
My chassis has a 15kg difference between them. Same blueprint, same number of staff made them, same staff heads too. Big difference in lap times too, obviously.
