That's a handy insight, thanks Richard.

Are you also experiencing any rate of natural degradation of levels yet?

I would guess higher levels wear down faster if unattended...

I had some very interesting results when I just developed my new diffuser.

My research level was good but I was able to get a part with a very good rating. This makes sense some what since we always had +2 chance at rating increase with an aggressive design approach but this seem to contradict development only going as high as your head design stats or do I have this wrong as research can only go as high as your head designer so we all thought design could also only go this high but really they can go higher.

I thought it was just research? I too have made gearboxes above the research level, but assumed that was expected!

Were they brand new designs? If they were based on previous designs then they will stick with that potential supposedly. I'm not sure this is how it should be though as once top parts are achieved the research level is a bit pointless perhaps.

It was a brand new design; which is why is confused me!!

It means that my diffuser as we discussed took a +2 stat potential jump from my previous one when it should have been equal too or only +1 at best.

Sadly for you Tom it means by next week I will have a Very Good Diffuser up from my previous okay one!! :p

From the news item:

"When a new part is created, this [research] level is mainly used to calculate how good the part is. But of course the designer skill also still plays a role (to make use of the inventive and reproductive stats)."

So you can still get parts that are better/worse than the research level.

It appears that way Adam but if research is the main factor in it then im surprised a designer could get an extra 2 levels on a part , that seems like a pretty major influence in the part level calculation.

It potentially means that research is pretty pointless and a waste of money...

If you have Very Good + parts and a Superb designer then you may well never need to do any research ever right?

And thus the game kinda becomes pointless playing lol! The teams at the top will spend less as they wont need to research while teams starting out will struggle to catch up as they will have to spend big on research...

Kinda hoping Frank might pop up soon and clear everything up.
